Dominique Hes on Regenerative Cities

Solvable New Works is a series of perspective-shifting conversations free and open to all. On January 6th we add the fifth layer in our Regeneration stack with a conversation about Regenerative Cities with Dr. Dominique Hes in the context of the essay collection, Enabling Eco-Cities, and her book, Designing for Hope: Pathways to Regenerative Sustainability. This conversation will explore cities as living systems and as possibility spaces for regenerating net gains to ecological and social health through their designs. Hes continues to be an important critic in asking why after decades of so-called advancement, sustainable development continues to underperform. She examines how moving beyond sociotechnical efficiency measures to look at the physical and non-physical patterns of place can help us to identify opportunities for increasing the vitality and viability of urban stocks, flows and relationships in service of ecosystemic regeneration.

DOMINIQUE HES

With degrees in science, engineering and PhD in architecture, Dr. Dominque Hes brings a multidisciplinary perspective to the question: can we move beyond sustainability to urban abundance and thriving? Hes is currently the Zero Carbon Buildings Lead for the City of Melbourne, Chair of the Board of Greenfleet, and an Adjunct Fellow in the Cities Research Institute at Griffith University. Her continued research centres on how to create a built environment that is good for people and the nature they are a part of incorporating knowledge from biomimicry, biophilia, regenerative design, permaculture, and positive development. Hes is the author and editor of 6 books and over 100 papers and reports.

REGENERATION NEW WORKS SERIES

We’re in a transitionary socio-cultural moment between systems with a growing recognition of the imperative to change the direction of social and planetary travel. As we let go of sustainability as an insufficient paradigm shift for our flourishing planetary future, Regeneration offers the promise of life-giving ways to inhabit the planet. New Works Regeneration is a knowledge commons that uses conversations as a space for emerging the myriad dimensions of radical improvement. The conversations are free and open to all with the intentions of strengthening connections, expanding perspectives, and championing important contributions. Esteemed writers volunteer to spend time with us, sharing their works as prompts for discussion amongst participants in breakouts. Through eight conversations, we enhance the Regeneration stack that reveres the complexity of the concept through the lenses of: Futures, Reporting, Cultures, Economics, Cities, Agriculture, Design, and Leadership. We request that registrants arrive ready to engage with the content and with others around the globe. With New Works Regeneration, we invite you to join us to help define what is emerging.
